Practical classes such as Cookery, Crafts, Gardening, and Computer Skills are successful ways of attracting newcomers into Family Learning. During these classes parents and carers are shown how, by doing these type of activities at home (or in the library in the case of computers) together with their children, can help pass on literacy, numeracy, and communication skills. They offer an opportunity to learn about science and the environment as a family.
Literacy
Following instructions, reading recipes, improving hand eye co-ordination, recording.
Numeracy
Measuring, estimating, ordering, temperature, putting together / matching, shopping, costing.
Communication
Oral explanations, summarizing, evaluation, sharing past experiences. Learning new ways of getting information and communicating using computers.
Environment
Sources of food, how food is grown, countries and climates. Print around us and advertising. Seasonal changes taking place around us.
Science
Effects of heat and light on food and plants. How soil, rain and sun influence plants.
